VIANNEY VARSITY FINISHES REGULAR SEASON STRONG
Vianney's balanced scoring period over period paced the game this past Thurs. night as the Golden Griffins dismissed the Oakville Tigers on their "Senior Night" 5-2. The first period was all Vianney with the first goal of the game going to Sophomore, Kerry McGlynn. The Griffins found themselves in penalty problems in the second period but thanks to some excellent goaltending by Senior Tyler Parks stopping 14 of 16 shots in the period, the Griffins were able to escape the period in a 2-2 tie. Vianney's second goal in the second period giving the Griffins a brief 2-0 lead was added by Sophomore, Kurt Chestnus. Vianney regained momentum in the third period and the shot that put the icing on the cake came off the stick of Junior forward David Campbell. Campbell picked the upper corner on the Oakville keeper midway through the third period for what proved to be the game winner. Two more goals were added in the final minutes of the game one by Sophomore Paul Scheipeter as Vianney simply wore out Oakville and secured the win.

The next evening, Vianney squared off with MCC long time rival Desmet in the last game of the regular season. This was a good contest with solid action and chances on both ends of the ice. As was the case all season long, Vianney matched up well against Desemt and this was evidenced by the shots in the game...Vianney 26, Desmet 27. In the end, the difference maker in this game came on a shorthanded goal by the Spartans and Desmet wins 2-3. Alex Naeger had a solid performance in goal for the Griffins and goals were scored by Paul Scheipeter and Kerry McGlynn. With the regular season ending this weekend Mid States Playoffs are right around the corner.
Playoff schedules will be released by the middle of next week.

VIANNEY VARSITY IMPROVES SEEDING POSITION IN CHALLENGE CUP PLAYOFFS
Last season the Varsity Hockey Griffins found themselves two places further down the seeding ladder for the end of season Challenge Cup. Oddly enough with this improvement, Vianney (#12) still draws the same first round opponent in Francis Howell Central (#5). The Griffins are no strangers to Howell Central as the two teams met earlier this season with Vianney getting the upperhand in this game with a 4-3 win at the South County Recreation (Kennedy) Complex.
Game one will be this Friday Feb. 5, 2010 at 9:30 pm at the Rec Plex South in St. Peters, MO. Game two of the first round playoffs will be Monday Feb. 8, 2010 at 7:00 pm at the South County Recreation (Kennedy) Complex.
